SEO copywriting can treble your profits

What is SEO?

In short, Search Engine Optimisation, or 'SEO' is a marketing technique. It is used for preparing a website so that, once a relevant search is undertaken, its chances of being ranked in the top results of a search engine are greatly increased.

As well as website coding, the way the text on a web page is written can have a huge influence upon whether the site is found or not (or even blacklisted) by search engines like Google. I have written (and rewritten) websites for companies that have then gone on to see trebled profits, simply because the copywriting was written with SEO in mind.

SEO Copywriting has to be up there for consideration as the No 1 priority when designing a site if it really is to be 'visible'. After all, what's the point in having a stunning website, article or online press release if no one can find it?

The Dos and Don'ts of SEO

DO research which keywords and niche phrases are best and most appropriate for your website. Aim for one keyword or phrase per page.

DON'T assume your site can rank highly based upon the inclusion of just one keyword through the site, however. If only it were that simple!

DO include your key words in your main heading, your sub headings, the first line of your paragraphs, and in any emboldened, italicised and bulleted text . . .

DO play with the phrases, switch things around, break them up, take as many attempts as necessary until you are 100% happy with them, and make sure they make sense.

DON'T put SEO Copywriting at the expense of beautiful, fluent writing. The trick is to get your copywriting to flow naturally and read well.

DO aim for a keyword density of around 5%. More than that can be overdoing it.

DON'T embark upon frenzied keyword stuffing. Too many keywords will have your audience leaving your site in droves. They could get you dropped from the big search engines.

DON'T plagiarise. Using other people's writing is, well, wrong. Come up with your own ideas. You will be surprised at what you can come up with if you stick at it!

DO check your keywords every six months.

DON'T assume that because your glossy and exciting company brochure is stunning it will translate perfectly for the Web. Web copywriting is a whole different ball game. Write it from scratch with SEO keywords in mind.

DO include keywords and phrases in your links and at the rear of the site.

DON'T assume putting key phrases in the Meta Key Word Tag is enough to get you the No 1 spot in the rankings. It won't.

DO increase your overall search engine ranking by increasing the number of links to your website from other relevant websites.

And, finally . . .

DON'T assume top search engine rankings are only for the big companies. This is a myth. A website that is thoroughly and properly search engine optimised can rank highly.
